‘Fishing is NOT Human(e)’ Campaign
The fishing practices employed by the UK fishing industry subject fish to immense suffering and result in the unintentional capture of numerous marine animals, known as bycatch. Fish experience agonizing deaths through suffocation or being crushed under the weight of other fish, while many are kept alive in nets or on fishing vessels, enduring extreme stress, and ultimately are gutted to death with no remorse. These inhumane practices not only disregard the sentience of fish, but also contribute to the depletion of fish populations and disrupt marine ecosystems in the UK.
Moreover, bycatch, particularly in trawling, unintentionally captures and kills dolphins, turtles, seabirds, and other species, exacerbating ecological imbalances caused by overfishing. At the current rate, our oceans will be dead by 2048. There are plenty of plant-based options available that do not involve the exploitation of fish, such as tofu, tempeh, and seitan, which provide the necessary nutrients for a healthy diet without contributing to the suffering of marine life.
SPECIESISM.WTF was founded in 2023 by Interdisciplinary Artist and Animal Rights Activist Stephanie Lane. Through large-scale billboard artwork, performance art, and exhibitions, we aim to instil critical animal rights messaging, in collaboration with local activists globally. Please support our artistic campaigns which encourage people to think about how we exploit nonhuman animals due to our engrained speciesism.
