WTF IS SPECIESISM?

Current Campaign | London 23’

SPECIESISM believes that whilst it is important to consider the ways in which different forms of oppression intersect and compound, OUR FOCUS HERE IS ON NONHUMAN ANIMALS, and that we do not stray from keeping them at the forefront of every campaign we do. In order to end speciesism and end the exploitation of nonhuman animals, we cannot conflate the moral viewpoints regarding humans and nonhumans alike, and instead we should focus solely on highlighting the injustices inflicted onto nonhumans caused by a speciesist and human supremacist worldview.

With this view, our campaigns will challenge the public’s perception through the arts, creating powerful imagery that place humans in similar situations non-human animals are subjected to for human consumption or entertainment, with the aim to counter-condition society and create a compassionate, exploitation-free world for all non-human animals.

Speciesism is the assumption that human beings are superior to other animals, and that this superiority justifies treating nonhuman animals differently, often with little to no consideration or moral value compared to humans. This term was first coined by British Psychologist Richard D. Ryder in 1970, and then popularised by the Australian Philosopher Peter Singer in his book "Animal Liberation" (1975).

One of the most famous quotes on speciesism comes from Singer himself: "The prejudice is analogous to that of racism or sexism, in that it involves a failure to take into account the interests of beings who are not members of our species when making moral decisions."

Singer was inspired by philosopher Tom Regan, who stated "The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity."

We couldn’t agree more.

Speciesism is similar to other forms of discrimination, such as racism and sexism, in that it involves treating individuals differently based on a characteristic that is not morally relevant. Just as it is wrong to discriminate against someone based on their race or gender, it is also wrong to discriminate against animals based on their species.

We are creative changemakers trying to tear down the advertising world and build something new; using the arts to counter-condition our society in a way that's better for ALL sentient beings. Every LIMITED-EDITION purchase 100% directly funds our ANIMAL RIGHTS campaigns which feature major-city billboard artworks and live art installations worldwide.
